Summer

This is my favourite season, not because I was born in Summertime, but because it is so bountiful, full of fruits and veg, from Strawberries, Redcurrants, Raspberries, to Fennel, Cucumber, Courgettes, passing by Tomatoes, Blueberries, Beans and Peas and many more. It is the time for eating outdoors to enjoy the sun when picnics, and BBQs mark days full of fun and small pleasures. In our garden when the first tomatoes turn red, I love eating them almost straight away, just like that, halved with a little Sea Salt upon them: they are so refreshing. It reminds me of my childhood when the guides of our summer camps were giving some tomatoes to us as snacks on our long mountain hikes. Summer is also the season of choice to eat fresh, vibrant salads, to aim for cold food like a lovely Gazpacho instead of hot food, when a cold pie or a quiche is just perfect for a hot day. Then there's the joy of good BBQ evenings when a special spice rub makes the meat sing as it sizzles away above the charcoal, when the fish 'en Papillote' is a little heavenly parcel of flavour and goodness, when nicely charred corn cobs receive luscious buttery coats full of smoky paprika... Summarising Summer makes me want to whistle Mungo Jerry's 'In the Summertime' , it brings sunshine to my heart. Summer makes me happy to be alive.
