The Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, is the one which the Sandwich was named after because he asked during a gambling game to be brought food which was some meat between two slices of Bread. However the history of the Sandwich, or something similar to Sandwiches has been reported for a very long time.

Leftovers Sandwich.

The beauty about the Sandwich is that it is easy to concieve but also very fast to assemble. It can also be a way to deal with leftovers. When we do have a big feast like Thanksgiving or Christmas, New Year's Eve, we can end up with too much food. We did big it up for the big day and for the guests and then there is the after party which is a simple Sandwich in the morning you feel no will to cook. It could be your cold Turkey moment... Just the morning after, and a sense of exhaustion, a good Sandwich can lift you up to bring back a smile upon your face. Leftover Roast Beef, Turkey, Chicken, Sauces can be the perfect fillings for a Sandwich. The creation of a Sandwich is just left to your imagination.

Ham, Cheese and Tomato Sandwich.

A Sandwich is not only for the Summer Season, it is for all year round but I can't help associating it with trips on the road in the Summer and good old Picnics on fields of grass. The Sandwich seems to have connotations attached to it of being enjoyed on the move or being at leisure a little: the 'you do fit something to eat a bit when you are on the beat'.

A Sandwich is litteraly a slap bang meal beatween two slices of Bread.

A Sandwich can be the Break between two moments in time: A fast one or a leisurely one. So before trips to the farm of my Uncle, my Mum used to prepare Ham and Cheese Sandwiches. They were Baguettes wrapped in foil. Tomatoes and Lettuce enhanced them. It was food on the go. However Sandwiches can be a Snack, a Brunch, a Lunch indoors to be indulged upon as well.

 Some Sandwiches can be very indulgent... Another take on the Ham, Cheese, Tomato and Lettuce Sandwich.

If a Sandwich is to be taken indoors, it could be made very lush. At best at Home with all the mod and com, one can create a large yet healthy Sandwich. For example an Egg and Cress Sandwich which would have slices of hard boiled Eggs of your choice like Duck Eggs, the Bread you prefer like Ciabatta, Cress you do grow in the Garden, slices of Cucumber to make it Summery, a drizzle of Home Made Mustard Mayo... and there you are with a smile at your desk on a rainy Summer afternoon. You can add Pastrami in the Sandwich if you want.

  Sandhwiches can be light or heavy. For Summer, even a chilly Summer, I like a light Sandwich with Summery ingredients: Tomatoes, Radishes, Cucumber...

The advantage of doing your own Sandwich is obviously to choose your own Ingredients, to make it to your taste, to avoid your own Food allergies or restriction. The other advantage is to make the Sandwich seasonal and personal to you. During Summer, my Ingredients of choice are: Tomatoes, Sundried Tomatoes, Spinach, Lettuce leaves of all varieties, Sweet Peppers either fresh, preserved or roasted, Mozzarella, Parmesan, Ricotta, Philadelphia, Salami, Mortadella, Parma Ham, Tuna, Salmon, Sardines, etc...

 Tomato, Chicken Breast, Spinach, Cucumber and Mustard small Sandwiches for a quick Brunch are always a handy things to eat.

In Summer, doing a party outdoors or indoors, mini Sandwiches are a good idea to feed many. They are not Canapés for they are more filling. However in the same time their content can be refreshing. In a sense it is being in a Banquet mode when you serve them to Guests. (bare in mind do not do parties during a pandemic, preserve yourself and the people you love, like and everyone).

It has to be said and recognised that Sandwiches are a good and convenient way to feed oneself or many. It is a little bit of a slap-slap-bang-bang then your food is ready. But when you are peckish on a work mode or a low energy mode one, a Sandwich is a good pick me up: Easy and fast to prepare and eat.
