A Selection of Bagels

Who could have thought that such a little round Bread with a hole could bring such pleasure to many. A Bagel is a Brunch, it is a Lunch. Back in the days when I was giving private French lessons in Fulham, I was passing by a Bagel Shop in Hammersmith Station. They sold purely just Bagels from savoury to sweet ones. Their Menu was rather rigid however they had also a weekly Special and a daily one as well.

My favourite Bagel on their Black Board Menu was the one with Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, chopped Chives, a dash of Lemon Juice and a pinch of Black Pepper. The Bagel itself was rather simple but covered with Poppy Seeds. It was nice to enjoy one before going to give the lesson or afterwards if the Shop was still open.

Bagels as long as they are the right shape can be taylor made to your taste.

Another of their Bagels I loved, in Spring and Autumn, was with slices of Pastrami, Rocket Leaves, Tomato Slices and creamed Horseradish Sauce. So a Bagel is a vehicule to contain a delicious filling to eat for a Lunch, a Brunch, a quick Snack on the go or a Midnight Snack.

It can be a replacement for the Burger by all means or a little change for variety. All sorts of products/ingredients can fit inside a Bagel as much as with Burger Buns. This make the Bagel a convenient alternative.

You can griddle Bagels to give them a nice colour and a toasted taste alongside Meat patties because they will absorb some flavour from the Meat Juices.

I will also add that they do make excellent Student Food, either on the go or when the Students are deeply studying well into the night. Another use is the TV Dinner... This is when you don't want to cook too much because there is that program that you must absolutly watch.

There is another point to mention in the favour of the Bagel. The texture, the Dough of the Bagel is more dense than the one of a Burger Bun. Therefore it holds together better for longer. In terms of time, longevity, a Bagel has a longer shelf life because of their moisture content which is less than the one of a Burger Bun. Hence a Bagel will not develop mould as fast as a Burger Bun...

A bag of Bagels is excellent to have in one's home. They are ever so convenient. Above Cinnamon and Raisin Bagels.

Savoury options for Bagels are my favourites however there are also the sweet ones to consider. A Bagel fully flavoured with Cinnamon and with Raisins within is ever so nice eat warm, like that or with Apple Compote... Imagine a Bonefire night, watching Fireworks with that little warm Bagel in your hands... It will be warming your hands and your belly.
