Our Rock Doves and Pigeons.

Since the creation of Cat TV, when we kept all our Cats indoors permanently and started to feed the Birds for the Cats to watch and be entertained, we saw a rise in the Birds population of our Garden from Sparrows to Starlings passing by Rock Doves, Feral and Town Pigeons.

The Pigeon I call 'My Friend'. It is rather old now about 5 to 6 years but still winging its way about and coming for a good meal.

Although I like Pigeons and rescued some during my life, I never expected my Garden to become their port of call after storms, or when they are hurt and need to recover for a while. They have food here and are not treated like pests or vermins.

Rock Doves in my Garden. Their beautiful coloured necks are always nice to see.

Charles Darwin was a Pigeon Fancier but in a sense much like Mendel studied his Peas. It was more to crack the evolution/genetic conundrum. I must say that since seing the Pigeon which I called My Friend which has a whitish head, more of my Pigeons are getting more white feathers. There are numerous genes going around in my group.

My Friend's progeniture with its little group. Rock Doves are very social birds. They are a very mixed bunch.

I must report there one instance which speak about the sense of group or community among Pigeons. It was just pure observation from my  writing desk. A healthy Pigeon brought to us, to our feeding table, an injured one. It was a beggar's belief moment. The healthy one did stay for a while then left at dusk, leaving the wounded one behind. We fed the Pigeon that couldn't fly well. The friendly Pigeon came to check upon it every day. As for the wounded one it did recover, we call it 'Rocky Road',  it loves to stay upon our roof.

The injured 'Rocky Road'. It was touch and go to get it back on track. It did stay on the feeding table for a good while until it could fly properly again. But then Rocky decided to stay on our roof most of the time. Rocky is still with us.

One of the first attempt of Rocky trying to fly again ended upon the office window and we did put it back upon the table. Rocky just did have to wait to get strong. Rocky did leave its print of its effort which was rather touching. However as I said Rocky is never far away, like its friend who always comes to the Garden and the feeding table.

This is not Jackson Pollock artwork, this was Rocky first attempt at flying properly again. It did fail. But the second one was a success.
